Olivia Covey

Managing Editor, Writer

Olivia is a magazine journalism major and during her high school years she began to write for the school  newspaper. Olivia immediately fell in love with putting stories together and seeing people read them and take something from them. Editing is her favorite part, which to her may be a little nerdy; however, she loves polishing all of the details and making a story complete. She spends her free time reading, writing, listening to music, making playlists and finding new shows and movies to watch on Netflix and Hulu.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to be writing or editing for a publication that I love, creating content that educates people without intimidating them.

What makes a good helper?

A good helper is someone who is willing to do what it takes to make someone else’s life easier. Sometimes they even put the needs of others above their own to make sure that everyone’s needs are met. I have helped my community back home by being a supportive role model to a lot of the younger students I went to high school with, always stepping up when someone needed a hand, and just always smiling.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope that, not to sound selfish but I hope I’m making more money than I am now. I would love to work for a publication where I can copy edit. I think that's where I would fit into the newspaper world.

What makes a good helper?

I think that a helper ought to be everyone. Why do a job if it’s only beneficial to yourself? On weekends I answer hotlines. It’s a crisis hotline for folks who are looking for inpatient stuff and we help them direct to that.

Martin is a journalism major with a concentration in news and features. As soon as he moved back to Chicago, he was focused on finishing school and decided to pick a major that involved writing. He landed on journalism and enjoys writing about food and enjoys proofreading, copy editing and likes the style of writing a review. Martin plays the piano and also writes music, he plays Dungeons and Dragons and loves cooking.

Yasmin Mendiola

Web Editor, Writer

Yasmin is a journalism major with a concentration in news and features. As a young girl, she religiously watched news before and after school. She loved how stories were told and the stories touched her, she was curious how they came together. As a journalist, she loves to hear everyone’s story and know more about others and write about them. To her, journalism is a way to give voice to the voiceless. Yasmin loves to read, especially about hip-hop, listen to music, take long walks at the park, look at sunsets and watch basketball.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself writing for The Source about old school hip-hop and underground artists. Hopefully, I get to visit the Bronx, New York, which is where hip-hop started. I want to explore and talk to the founders of hip-hop.

What makes a good helper?

A good helper is someone who is there when someone else needs them the most. I feel like everyone has a good heart and is willing to show that through kindness. I love helping others. I often give food to the homeless and donate clothes to people who need them.

Lauren Stanford

Writer

Lauren is a journalism major with a concentration in news and features. She always enjoyed English and writing but wasn’t great at creative writing so she found an outlet in journalism. Her father is a freelance journalist, that’s where she got some inspiration from. When Lauren was in high school, she was part of the school’s newspaper, and she absolutely loved it. She loves meeting new people and learning more about what they’re passionate about and what drives them; she also enjoys rock climbing, gaming, hiking/backpacking and music.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I plan to be living in the Southwest, hopefully working for an outdoor type of magazine. Writing about rock climbing and the outdoor lifestyle is my true passion.

What makes a good helper?

I think a good helper is someone who puts others first; they consider the needs of their community and use their own resources to help others. As a rock climber, I have helped my community by volunteering with organizations that help get underprivileged kids into rock climbing. Because the sport is so expensive, a lot of kids just generally don't have access to the sport.
